the Active Music Series

The Active Music Series (AMS) presents performances of experimental notation, conduction, noise, compositions with improvisation, avant jazz, free improvisation, chamber, electronic & electroacoustic music. The AMS started in October 2008 at the Ivy Room in Albany as a monthly show for free jazz and improvised music ensembles. Over time, the Uptown Nightclub in Oakland has become the primary venue for the AMS, presenting over 20 concerts in the past two years on the second Tuesday of each month.

the AMS is an active and supportive element for bay area musicians and community members. Over the course of the series, more than 100 local musicians, including emerging and established artists, have been given the opportunity to perform in acts ranging from 20 piece large groups to solo and duo performances. Past performers include the Oakland Active Orchestra, Cash Pony, Tiberius, Eat the Sun, ROVA Saxophone Quartet, Henry Grimes, Lisa Mezzacappa’s Bait and Switch, Moe!kestra, James Fei , Antimatter, Aaron Novik’s Thorny Brocky,  Black Spirituals, Phillip Greenlief’s Citta di Vitti, Tujurrikuja, Horaflora, Nathan Clevenger Group, Ava Mendoza, and Joshua Allen’s Deconstruction Orchestra.

All concerts of the Active Music Series are supported through donations. Listings can be found on the Transbay Calendar and at bayimproviser.com.
