This month we will be featuring new compositions and structured improvisations by the great bassist and composer Lisle Ellis! The orchestra will be performing a new piece by Lisle, who returns to the bay Area this fall as artist-in-residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts.
Ellis’ distinct instrumental voice has been heard in a multitude of concerts on the world stage in the company of legends of the avant-garde such as Paul Bley, Peter Brotzmann, Andrew Cyrille, Joe McPhee, and Cecil Taylor; leading contemporary players Marilyn Crispell, Dave Douglas, Fred Frith, and John Zorn, and on more than 40 recordings for international labels such as Black Saint, DIW, and Hat Art, and New World.

The group is a kinetic, versatile unit that can climb through compositional complexities, swing from the outer limbs of jazz, and plummet into the groundlessness of spontaneous soundspace… and the possibility of hopping on a passing groove is never out of the question.
Green Mitchell is:
Cory Wright – tenor saxophone, clarinet, compositions
John Schott – guitar
Lisa Mezzacappa – bass
